You don’t have to figure this out alone. When a loved one passes away, the amount of paperwork and logistics can feel overwhelming. This checklist is designed to help you focus on the most time-sensitive tasks during the first 10 days, ensuring identity protection and account security without the stress.
Step 1: Immediate Security & Protection
Days 1-3 | Before making major financial decisions, prioritize securing your loved one's physical and digital identity to prevent fraud.
- Secure the Home: Ensure all doors and windows of the deceased’s property are locked, and remove any immediate valuables or visible mail.
- Redirect the Mail: Set up mail forwarding with the post office to keep track of important bills, bank statements, and potential creditor notices.
- Lock Down Devices & Email: Secure computers, smartphones, and primary email accounts to prevent unauthorized access and protect digital identity.
Step 2: Official Documents & Notifications
Days 4-7 | Obtaining the right documents early will prevent bottlenecks later.
- Order Death Certificates: Request multiple certified copies (we usually recommend 10–15). You will need original copies for banks, insurance claims, and government agencies.
- Notify Social Security (SSA): Contact the SSA to stop benefit payments and inquire about potential survivor benefits. (Note: Have the Social Security Number and Death Certificate ready).
- Contact Employers or Pension Providers: If applicable, notify their human resources department, pension administrator, or the VA to stop payments and claim any owed benefits.
Step 3: Account Control & Stopping Charges
Days 8-10 | Locate financial accounts and stop unnecessary money leaks.
- Build a Master Inventory: Gather bank statements, check the mail, and review credit reports to list all open accounts and institutions.
- Cancel Subscriptions & Utilities: Stop recurring charges, unwanted services, and automated billing.
- Notify Banks & Creditors: Send initial notifications to banks to freeze accounts and prevent unauthorized withdrawals or fees.
